Lincoln High School Racquetball Coach Seth Bouska is preparing players for the Oregon High School Racquetball Championships, which took place this past week in Portland. Oregon is one of the few places in the country where racquetball remains popular, with over 200 students from a dozen high schools participating in the Oregon High School Racquetball League.
The National High School Racquetball Championships brought over 100 students, including competitors from out of state like California, Florida, Illinois, Colorado, and Missouri. The event alternates between Portland and St. Louis, highlighting the strong history each region has with the sport.
In Oregon high schools, racquetball is considered a Club Sport, allowing anyone to sign up and play without cuts or levels. Players compete in singles, doubles, and mixed pairings, earning points for their teams. Many students, like Beaverton High School senior Jacob O’Brien, found the sport through friends and now enjoy the supportive team atmosphere.
Despite challenges such as fewer available courts, the OHSRL remains optimistic about its future, especially as students like Sprague High School senior Izzy Youso plan to continue playing in college. The league’s president Ro-El Cordero emphasizes the importance of community support in sustaining the sport.
Overall, racquetball in Oregon continues to thrive, with students like O’Brien expressing interest in playing in tournaments beyond high school. As the sport gains popularity in Portland and beyond, there is hope for a bright future for racquetball in the region.
