Oregon Taxpayers Embrace New Direct File System for 2025 Tax Season
SALEM, Ore. – As of the first month of the 2025 tax season, over 3,400 Oregon taxpayers have successfully filed their income tax returns electronically through the newly introduced Direct File Oregon. Notably, more than 1,400 of these filings were completed using the combined option of IRS Direct File, enabling taxpayers to file both federal and state returns simultaneously.
This innovative approach allows users to initiate their filing on the IRS website, where they respond to a series of interview-style questions. Once they finish their federal return, the information automatically transfers to Direct File Oregon, simplifying the process and reducing completion time to approximately 16 minutes. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with users rating their experience an average of 4.5 out of 5.
While IRS Direct File does not support all tax situations—such as those involving reported dividends or capital gains—it is expected to benefit around 640,000 Oregon taxpayers this season, part of a larger national rollout. The IRS has expanded eligibility for this program, allowing more citizens to take advantage of the free filing option.
Taxpayers are required to have online IRS and Revenue Online accounts to utilize the combined filing system, and those without existing accounts can create them easily. For those not eligible for IRS Direct File, Direct File Oregon remains available for state tax filing.
Computer kiosks for Direct File Oregon are available at regional offices in Bend, Eugene, Gresham, and Portland, with additional assistance offered by department volunteers at libraries across 18 communities throughout February, March, and April. More details are accessible on the Oregon Department of Revenue’s website.
