Oregon Ducks Soar to Victory in Home Opener
EUGENE, OR — The No. 14-ranked Oregon Ducks softball team kicked off their home schedule with an impressive 9-5 victory over the San Diego Toreros on Friday afternoon. The Ducks jumped ahead early, scoring two runs before making their first out, thanks to a lead-off single from Kai Luscher and a subsequent two-run single by Rylee McCoy.
Despite holding a commanding lead for much of the game, Oregon faced a challenge when San Diego erupted for five runs in the fifth inning, momentarily taking the lead. However, the Ducks swiftly responded, scoring five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Key contributions included runs scored by Dezianna Patmon and Kaylynn Jones, capitalizing on a Torero error to reclaim the lead.
In total, three Ducks players notched multiple hits, with Katie Flannery standout by hitting a triple. The game’s win was secured by pitcher Lyndsey Grein, who entered in the fifth and struck out five batters, improving her undefeated record to 10-0 for the season.
Oregon continued to showcase their dominance later in the day with a 9-1 mercy-rule victory over Portland State. The Ducks displayed their offensive prowess by scoring in five of six innings, concluding the game early with an RBI-single from Flannery, who played a pivotal role in both matches.
Meanwhile, Portland State had a thrilling start to their day, staging an impressive 11-7 comeback over the Loyola Ramblers. The Vikings scored nine runs in the final two innings, with key performances from Alison Harris and Rylee Gaustad, the latter leading the team with a 3-for-4 hitting effort.
The Oregon Classic continues at Jane Sanders Stadium throughout the weekend.
