Columbia Lions Fall to No. 11 Oregon in Series Finale
EUGENE, Ore. — The Columbia Lions faced a tough defeat against the No. 11 ranked Oregon Ducks, losing 7-0 in the final match of their three-game series held at PK Park on Sunday. The loss brings Columbia’s record to 1-6 for the season.
Lions’ starting pitcher Joe Sheets put forth a commendable effort, pitching five innings and allowing just one run while striking out four batters. Despite a solid outing, the offense struggled, with only two hits throughout the game—one from Sam Miller in the first inning and another from Jack Kail in the ninth. Cole Fellows contributed to the offense by reaching base twice due to walks.
Oregon struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI single from Ryan Cooney. Columbia had opportunities to score but failed to capitalize, leaving runners stranded in both the fourth and sixth innings. The Ducks doubled their lead in the seventh with a hit by pitch that brought in two runs after the bases were loaded, making it 3-0. Oregon’s offense continued to flourish in the eighth inning, pushing the score to 7-0 with four additional runs.
In the ninth, Columbia managed to get two runners on base, but pinch-hitter Tate Vogler struck out, sealing the game for Oregon. Columbia will look to regroup as they prepare for their next challenge against No. 6 Georgia in a three-game series, with the first game scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. in Athens, Georgia.
