The Pentagon to deploy nearly 3,000 more active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border

The Pentagon is sending nearly 3,000 additional active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border as President Donald Trump aims to curb illegal immigration. The troops will come from Fort Carson and Fort Stewart and will provide transportation, engineering, and aviation support. They will not be involved in deportation or interdiction operations. With these additional troops, there will be a total of about 9,200 U.S. troops at the southern border, including National Guard troops. The Pentagon states that these troops will reinforce and expand current border security operations to protect the United States’ territorial integrity. Trump is pushing to increase the military’s involvement in shutting down the border and repatriating detained migrants. Military personnel have been sent to the border since the 1990s to address migration, drug trafficking, and transnational crime. This new deployment is part of Trump’s effort to fulfill a key campaign promise.
