Toreros Split at Oregon Classic: Strong Win Against Portland State, Struggles Against No. 14 Oregon
EUGENE, ORE. – The University of San Diego Toreros showcased their offensive strengths on Sunday, March 2, 2025, with a decisive 13-3 victory over Portland State in the opening game of the Oregon Classic, hosted by the University of Oregon. However, they faltered in their second matchup against the No. 14 Oregon Ducks, suffering a 6-0 shutout.
In the first game, the Toreros (8-12) displayed a powerful offense, racking up 15 hits. Key contributions came from Carly Ruiz, Alyssa Hernandez, Michelle Delgado, and EJ Joyner, who each posted 2-for-3 performances. Pitcher Kaitlyn Bartlow earned her fourth win of the season, limiting Portland State (4-14) to three runs and six hits over five innings.
The Toreros jumped to a 2-0 lead early courtesy of a two-RBI single by Joyner. After allowing Portland State to equalize in the first, USD responded with a barrage of runs, scoring three in the second and five in the fourth inning, taking advantage of the Vikings’ five errors. A late triple by Dalia Powell capped the scoring at 13-3.
In contrast, the Toreros struggled against a formidable Oregon team in their second game. The lineup managed only three hits, facing a powerful Ducks pitching staff. USD’s pitcher Kelsey Tadlock gave up three home runs, leading to a 6-0 deficit by the fifth inning. Despite a late rally in the final frame, the Toreros were unable to score.
Looking ahead, USD will face Portland State again on March 2, 2025, before returning home and heading to Arizona for the GCU Tournament, starting with doubleheaders against New Mexico and UNLV on March 7.
