Democratic state representative Hoa Nguyen, from Oregon, announced on Friday that she is undergoing treatment for stage 4 cancer. She has started chemotherapy and will be unable to physically attend committee hearings or votes. Despite this, she remains committed to her constituents and her top projects, focusing on bills addressing chronic absenteeism and improving access to child care. Nguyen’s office did not disclose the specific type of cancer she is battling.
Nguyen’s colleague, freshman representative Sarah Finger McDonald, is also undergoing treatment for colon cancer. McDonald, who has had previous rounds of treatment, spoke publicly about her diagnosis to emphasize the importance of early screenings for colon cancer. The full House in Oregon meets only once or twice a week, primarily conducting work in committees. Although Nguyen has missed most sessions in February, she hopes to attend committee meetings remotely during her treatment.
Nguyen made history in 2022 as one of five Vietnamese American legislators elected to the state House. She represents the 48th House District in southeast Portland and surrounding suburbs. Despite the challenges she faces with her health, Nguyen remains dedicated to serving her constituents and continuing her legislative work.
The news of Nguyen’s cancer diagnosis comes at a time when many are facing health challenges and the importance of regular screenings and early detection is being highlighted. The House Democratic Caucus is expected to continue working to protect the interests of Oregonians during Nguyen’s absence.
