Aztecs Fall Short Against Ducks in High-Scoring Clash
EUGENE, Ore. – In a thrilling back-and-forth match, the San Diego State lacrosse team narrowly lost to the Oregon Ducks, 17-16, on Thursday night. The Aztecs, currently at 4-3 for the season, started strong with an impressive first half where they scored 11 goals, but the late surge by the Ducks proved too much.
San Diego State opened the game with a commanding 6-0 lead, with freshmen Keira Doyle-Odenbach and Bella Tan each contributing significantly, the latter netting five goals throughout the match. Tan’s performance marked her fourth game this season with five or more goals, elevating her total to 26. Matty Spaeth also made a notable impact with three goals matching her season high.
Oregon went into overdrive in the second half, responding to San Diego State’s early lead with seven consecutive goals, led by Bri Carrasquillo who scored six times in total. Despite the Aztecs’ efforts to regain momentum, including goals from Spaeth and Tan in the fourth quarter, they couldn’t reclaim the lead as Oregon capitalized on defensive lapses to secure their first win since February 22.
SDSU goalkeeper Caitlin Boughton shone with a season-high 14 saves, while freshman Grace Moore made a brief appearance in the final minutes, contributing one save but incurring two goals. Reflecting on the hard-fought match, Head Coach Kylee White expressed pride in her team’s resilience while acknowledging areas for improvement, especially in free position opportunities.
