Oregon Volunteers Assisted Taxpayers in Securing $18 Million in Refunds Last Year

Press Release: Free Tax Help Available for Oregonians Through VITA Program

As tax season approaches, many Oregonians face anxiety over filing their taxes. However, free assistance is available through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which is operated by Cash Oregon under Metropolitan Family Services. In 2024, Cash Oregon’s dedicated volunteers assisted in preparing over 9,100 tax returns, facilitating a remarkable $18 million in refunds for taxpayers.

On a bustling Saturday at Cash Oregon’s headquarters in Portland, volunteers are hard at work assisting clients in both Spanish and English. Andrea Dobson, a former bus mechanic who has been a VITA volunteer since 2008, finds joy in helping others navigate their tax filings. “For me, it’s like a puzzle,” she shares, emphasizing the reward of connecting with clients through their unique stories.

VITA volunteers undergo extensive training and annual certification exams to stay updated on changing tax regulations, ensuring they provide accurate and confident assistance. A significant portion of Cash Oregon’s clients face language barriers, with about one-third having limited English proficiency. The program actively seeks bilingual volunteers to improve communication.

Despite concerns around the sharing of taxpayer data with immigration authorities, Cash Oregon reassures clients that filing taxes is crucial and remains confidential. The program also helps dispel misconceptions about immigrant families not participating in tax filing—highlighting that anyone earning income in the U.S. has a responsibility to report it.

The Cash Oregon program recognizes the importance of its volunteers, with Program Director Riley Eldredge emphasizing that without their commitment, these invaluable services may not be sustainable. Free tax preparation is available to individuals earning under $67,000, with sites across Oregon and Southwest Washington, as well as virtual appointments. This initiative continues to be a vital resource for the community, promoting financial well-being during tax season.
