San Diego Baseball Falls to No. 8 Oregon State in Series Opener
CORVALLIS, Ore. — The San Diego Toreros opened their three-game series against the eighth-ranked Oregon State Beavers with an 11-3 loss on Friday evening at Goss Stadium. Despite a spirited late-game rally, the Toreros were unable to overcome a significant early deficit.
Oregon State (8-3) established a commanding 6-0 lead before San Diego (2-11) got on the board in the seventh inning. Connor Meidroth sparked the comeback with an RBI single, followed by a sacrifice fly from Aden Howard, cutting the deficit to 6-2. However, the Beavers responded quickly, adding another run in the bottom of the seventh.
San Diego managed to score again when Jayden Lobliner drove in a run with an opposite-field single, bringing the score to 7-3. Unfortunately, that was as close as they would get. Cal Scolari, the redshirt freshman right-hander for the Toreros, received the loss after allowing four runs in 3.2 innings. However, standout relief by graduate transfer Hayden Cody, who pitched 1.1 perfect innings, provided a glimmer of hope.
Notable performances included Nico Libed, who went 1-for-3 with a run and drew two walks. Both of head coach Brock Ungricht’s successful challenges on the field helped his team throughout the match. The game attracted 3,754 fans, marking Oregon State’s home opener.
The Toreros are set to continue their series against Oregon State tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 1:35 PM. This matchup will be the first of two day games to conclude the series.
