14-year-old arrested after officer is killed and another is wounded in New Jersey shooting.

A 14-year-old suspect was taken into custody on murder charges following a shootout with Newark, New Jersey, police officers that resulted in one officer being killed and another hospitalized. The incident occurred in the city’s North Ward while officers were investigating reports of illegal firearms. The suspect and both officers were injured in the altercation, with the suspect being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Officer Joseph Azcona, a five-year veteran of the force, was killed while still in his patrol car. Another officer was wounded and hospitalized, initially in critical condition. At least one gun was recovered from the suspect, and four other individuals were also taken into custody for questioning.

Officials and community leaders expressed shock and grief over the incident, with Governor Phil Murphy calling for prayers for the officers and their families. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka condemned the shooting as a senseless act of violence and emphasized the need for society to prevent young people from accessing firearms and engaging in such dangerous behavior. The state attorney general’s office is monitoring the situation, and the circumstances leading up to the shooting are still under investigation. Baraka stressed the importance of collective responsibility in addressing the issue of gun violence in the community and called for better prevention efforts to keep children from committing such violent acts.
