Several Oregon House Republicans are calling on President Donald Trump to issue an executive order mandating voter ID and citizenship verification for voter registration across all states. This request was made in response to a “clerical error” in Oregon’s Motor Voter program that mistakenly registered 1,259 people to vote ahead of the 2024 election. The error was discovered by state leaders, prompting an audit of the program.
According to the Secretary of State’s office, most of the mistakenly registered individuals did not have a voting history, and only nine had a potentially illegal voting history. The error only affected a small fraction of the more than 760,000 Oregonians registered through the Motor Voter program in 2024. The Oregon DMV has since resumed automatic voter registration after implementing several reforms.
The letter from House Republicans criticized the limited scope of the audit and expressed concerns about lifting the moratorium on automatic voter registration. They also criticized a public hearing on a bill proposing to lower the voting age to 16, stating that it risks eroding public trust in the electoral system.
House Republican Leader Rep. Christine Drazan emphasized the need for federal legislation to codify the executive order’s requirements into law, aiming to create uniform standards across all states. Drazan also called for the Secretary of State to take a more direct role in overseeing Oregon’s elections to restore public trust. Oregon Democratic lawmakers have not yet commented on the letter.
