Oregon Invites Public Feedback on Proposed Land Sale for Hayden Island

Public Invited to Comment on Proposed Land Sale in Multnomah County

MULTNOMAH COUNTY, Ore. — The Oregon Department of State Lands (DSL) is calling for public feedback regarding a proposed sale of state-owned land situated on the south shore of Hayden Island in Multnomah County. The comment period commenced on March 5 and will continue until April 19, 2025.

The land, encompassing 65 acres, is being sought by the Interstate Bridge Group through the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) to satisfy compensatory mitigation requirements for the construction of the new I-5 bridge over the Columbia River. If purchased, the site will be preserved in its natural state to offset the environmental impact of the bridge project, with ODOT committed to managing the area indefinitely.

The targeted parcel lies within Township 2 North, Range 1 East, within sections 19 and 30, and is classified as historically filled land, created prior to May 28, 1963. It is dedicated to the Common School Fund.

The State Land Board has tasked the DSL with conducting due diligence regarding the sale, which includes evaluating the land’s market value and assessing its mineral, energy, wildlife, and cultural resources. Public input is seen as essential to this process, particularly regarding the presence of state or federally listed species, archaeological and historical resources, traditional uses for fishing or recreation, existing public access points, and the land’s significance for navigation.

Interested individuals can submit their comments via the DSL website, email at realproperty@dsl.oregon.gov, or by postal mail to the Oregon Department of State Lands at 951 SW Simpson Ave., Suite #104, Bend, OR 97702. Your feedback is vital to shaping the future of this valuable land.
