Strong Winds Fuel Brush Fires in New York City

Brush fires have erupted in Long Island and near Brooklyn, fueled by strong winds in New York which created an elevated risk of fire spread on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. The combination of low humidity and strong winds has made fires spread quickly, prompting a state of emergency to be declared in Suffolk County on Long Island. New York National Guard helicopter crews have been assigned to help firefighters on the ground, and state agencies have also responded to the wildfires. Several structures have been damaged, and injuries were reported, including a firefighter with second-degree burns.

In addition to the fires in Suffolk County, a fire in Brooklyn’s Gerritsen Beach was also under control by early evening. The New York City Fire Department and other local agencies responded to this fire, using helicopters and marine units to assist in extinguishing the flames. No injuries were reported in this fire.

The windy conditions in the region have led to road closures and wind advisories, with gusts of up to 30 mph expected to last through Sunday. There are warnings to exercise caution with any potential ignition sources, as fires have the potential to spread quickly under these conditions. The cause of the fires is currently unknown, and there have been no reports of injuries related to the fires.
