Sharaa says Assad is to blame as hundreds are killed in Syria

The wave of violence in Syria has reached major cities like Damascus and Aleppo, resulting in hundreds of civilian deaths, following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa has vowed to bring those responsible to justice, acknowledging the deep wounds left by the previous regime. Meanwhile, fighting has been concentrated in former Assad strongholds in the coastal regions of Latakia and Tartus, with the majority of civilians killed being Alawites. The clashes have also occurred in affluent neighborhoods like Mazzeh in Damascus and involve attacks on security forces by unknown assailants.

The violence has raised concerns about Sharaa’s ability to unify a diverse nation and reassure Western leaders, especially as atrocities are committed against religious and ethnic minorities. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called for accountability for the massacres against minorities, while humanitarian aid efforts are at risk of being hindered by the violence. The situation poses a threat of returning to cycles of violence, death, and displacement for the Syrian people, despite hopes for a more inclusive and peaceful future under new leadership.
