Los Angeles officials warn of evacuation ahead of heavy rain in wildfire-affected areas

The Los Angeles Fire Department issued evacuation warnings for areas affected by recent wildfires ahead of heavy rain and mudslides expected this week. The Palisades and Eaton fires burned through 40,000 acres and scorched over 15,000 buildings in January. The upcoming storms in Southern California make these areas highly susceptible to mudslides and debris flows. The LAFD warned residents near recent brush fires of the extreme danger posed by debris flows during rainstorms. Sierra Madre Fire Chief Brent Bartlett said that public safety personnel may not be able to enter an active debris flow zone if a mudflow occurs. Residents were urged to sign up for emergency alerts, create a household emergency plan, and restock supplies in preparation for potential flooding, mudslides, or storm damage. The warnings will remain in place until Thursday evening. The Palisades and Eaton fires were fueled by hurricane-force Santa Ana winds and killed at least 29 people. Both fires were declared fully contained on Jan. 31, more than three weeks after they started.
