Oregon National Guard Unit to Support Security at US-Mexico Border
PORTLAND, Ore. — The Oregon National Guard’s 1249th Engineer Battalion is set to deploy to the US-Mexico border for a year-long mission starting October 1, aimed at enhancing security operations. Maj. Christopher Campbell, the battalion operations officer, indicated that approximately 50 personnel with specialized skills will lead the operation, potentially overseeing two to five subordinate companies based on the sector assignment.
The deployment, orchestrated in collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense, will focus on providing critical command support to other National Guard units stationed at the southern border. The multi-faceted mission encompasses expertise in operations, medical and behavioral health services, as well as contracting, according to Maj. Wayne Clyne’s press release.
Though the precise location for the battalion’s deployment has not been finalized, major sectors include regions in California, Arizona, and Texas. Prior to the main mission, the unit will engage in extensive pre-mobilization training beginning in August, followed by two months of preparation at Fort Bliss in Texas.
This strategic deployment reflects ongoing efforts by various National Guard units to bolster national security efforts along the border, highlighting the integral role of state reserves in federal operations. Further details on the specific sectors and the engagement timeline will emerge as the deployment date approaches.
