Southern Oregon Flood Risk Assessment – KQEN News Radio

Flood Potential Outlook Issued for Southern Oregon Counties Amidst Heavy Rain and Snow Melt

March 13, 2025, 4:10 a.m. — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flood Potential Outlook for Douglas, Josephine, Jackson, Coos, and Curry counties due to forecasted rapid rises in rivers and streams caused by rain and melting snow. An active storm pattern is predicted to persist in the region through early next week, with significant precipitation expected from multiple systems.

Starting Thursday, an upper trough will create a showery atmosphere, followed by another frontal system on Friday. The weather is anticipated to deteriorate further as an atmospheric river is projected to deliver heavy moisture late Saturday into Sunday. These weather changes could result in substantial snow and wind across the area.

Forecasters are particularly concerned about the combination of intense rainfall and rising temperatures causing recently accumulated snow to melt quickly, leading to increased runoff. River levels, especially on streams and rivers west of the Cascades, are expected to surge from Sunday into Monday. Deer Creek near Roseburg is predicted to reach flood stage by Saturday night, while the Rogue River near Agness may follow suit by Sunday night. Other water bodies are also likely to experience hazardous rises, posing risks to anyone in close proximity to waterways.

According to the latest report, the Roseburg area could receive nearly three inches of rain between Friday and Sunday, with two inches expected on Sunday alone. On Wednesday, the Roseburg Regional Airport recorded 0.87 inches of rain, with afternoon temperatures reaching 51 degrees.
