Spring Whale Watch Week Returns to Oregon Coast
DEPOE BAY, Ore. – March 2024
Spring Whale Watch Week is set to enchant visitors along the Oregon coast from March 22 to March 30, as Oregon State Parks invites nature enthusiasts to witness the majestic return of gray whales. According to park ranger Peter McBride, this season offers a unique opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures as they swim closer to shore, often within a mile, with calves in tow.
During the event, volunteers and park rangers will be available at 14 designated viewing sites along the coast from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to assist visitors in spotting whales and answering questions. The Whale Watching Center in Depoe Bay will host additional activities, opening its doors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. However, visitors should note that Cape Foulweather will be closed for construction and will not be part of this year’s event.
As the gray whales embark on their annual migration back to Alaska, approximately 19,260 of them are anticipated to traverse Oregon’s waters from late winter through June. Notably, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently reported that the gray whale population has rebounded by approximately 30%, with counts rising from 14,530 in 2023 to an expected 19,260 in 2024. Despite this positive trend, the number of calves remains concerningly low.
Visitors are encouraged to dress for varying weather conditions and keep an eye on tide schedules during their excursions. Binoculars will be available for use at the Whale Watching Center, and attendees are invited to share their experiences on social media using the hashtags #OregonStateParks and #ORWhaleWatch.
