Federal Workers Express Concerns Over Trump Administration Cuts at Town Hall with Oregon Democrats

Title: Portland Town Hall Highlights Concerns Over Federal Layoffs Amid Trump’s Policies

Date: March 17, 2025

PORTLAND, Ore. — A packed town hall meeting held by Oregon Democratic legislators at the Federal Building on March 17 drew attention to fears over layoffs affecting federal employees and their ability to serve the public effectively under the Trump administration. Attended by federal workers and six of Oregon’s eight congressional members, the event provided a platform for individuals to vocalize their frustrations regarding the mass firings associated with federal cost-cutting initiatives spearheaded by President Trump and billionaire Elon Musk.

Senator Ron Wyden, the senior member of Oregon’s congressional delegation, accused Trump and Musk of undermining public service jobs and illegally terminating employees. "It is as clear as Crater Lake that these actions are an attack on your ability to serve publicly," Wyden stated.

Among those affected, Shawn McMurtrey, a disabled Army veteran and former USDA scientist, shared his experience with recent job loss, underscoring how it threatens essential services, particularly those crucial for agricultural health in Oregon. McMurtrey expressed concern over his future and the sacrifices made for his role.

Additionally, clinical psychologist Belle Zaccari voiced her worries about the impact of these layoffs on her ability to support veterans, highlighting her substantial student loan debt as indicative of broader struggles faced by professionals in the federal workforce.

Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield, who has initiated multiple lawsuits against the Trump administration, emphasized the importance of holding the administration accountable and ensuring adherence to the rule of law.

With mixed responses from attendees, including calls for more decisive action from Democratic leadership, the gathering reflects growing anxieties about the long-term implications of federal layoffs on critical services, the environment, and public safety in Oregon.
