Pro-Palestinian Activists File Lawsuit Against UCLA for Alleged Civil Rights Violations During Campus Encampment

More than 30 pro-Palestinian activists have filed a civil rights lawsuit against UCLA, alleging that the university violated their rights during demonstrations at a campus encampment. The plaintiffs claim they were deprived of their rights to assemble, speak, learn, and organize freely and safely, resulting in life-altering injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. The lawsuit also names the Los Angeles Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, and individuals involved in a “brutal riot” against the encampment as defendants.

The lawsuit alleges that law enforcement used excessive force and unlawfully arrested protesters, with police shooting projectiles at people’s heads and faces. The plaintiffs claim that counterprotesters violently assaulted them, with some suffering broken bones, sexual assault, and severe injuries. The complaint also states that police and private security did not provide adequate protection during the attack.

Personal testimonies included in the lawsuit describe the violence inflicted upon the protesters, with one student being hit in the head with a piece of wood and another being shot with rubber bullets multiple times. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages for the physical and psychological injuries suffered by the protesters.

The University of California president’s office is gathering information about the lawsuit, and the California Highway Patrol and Los Angeles Police Department have not yet commented. The university has implemented reforms to promote safety and combat discrimination on UC campuses.
