Oregonians Rush to Secure Appointments Ahead of REAL ID Deadline

Oregonians Face Long Lines at DMV as REAL ID Deadline Approaches

Portland, Ore. – As the May 7, 2025, deadline for obtaining the REAL ID quickly approaches, Oregonians are experiencing lengthy lines at DMV offices. On March 27, 2025, a line stretched out the door at the DMV on Powell Blvd, reflecting the urgency for residents to secure the necessary identification for air travel.

Recent reports indicate that over 1.3 million Oregonians have acquired a REAL ID since the state began issuing them nearly five years ago. With all travelers over 18 required to present a REAL ID, passport, or approved form of ID for domestic flights, the rush has intensified. Last week alone, the DMV issued 17,660 REAL IDs, a significant increase from nearly 6,500 during the same period last year.

“Appointment availability has diminished as the deadline nears,” said Amy Joyce, DMV administrator. The agency has added “hundreds more appointments,” which are quickly filling up, according to spokesperson Chris Crabb, who advised residents to check daily for availability as appointments are released 30 days in advance.

The REAL ID stems from the 2005 REAL ID Act, established to enhance ID security following the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. Oregonians can obtain a REAL ID by making appointments online or walking into a DMV office, but must present original documents proving identity, U.S. citizenship, and residency.

Travelers are reminded that only the REAL ID card, identifiable by a star in the upper right corner, will be accepted at TSA checkpoints. Although individuals will initially receive a temporary card, it will not be valid for boarding flights. A REAL ID costs an additional $30 and is valid for up to eight years.

As the deadline looms, authorities urge travelers to prepare in advance to avoid complications when flying.
