Judge orders release of detained Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil

A federal judge ruled that the Trump administration has the authority to deport Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil due to his alleged affiliations with Hamas, a designated terrorist organization. Khalil, a green card holder, was detained in March and has until April 23 to file for relief. The administration cited a provision from a 1952 law to justify Khalil’s deportation, claiming his presence in the country threatens U.S. foreign policy. Lawyers for the government allege that Khalil withheld information about his associations and employment history. Secretary of State Marco Rubio supported Khalil’s deportation, stating that Khalil’s beliefs could justify removal. The administration’s actions against foreign students have sparked protests at Columbia University and around New York City. Additionally, DHS announced a task force to monitor immigrants’ social media activity, including foreign students, for antisemitism. The Trump administration has revoked visas of foreign students in at least 29 states. The administration has also revoked funding from universities, including Columbia, Harvard, and Princeton, for dissatisfaction with how they handled protests against the war in Gaza. Khalil’s case is one of several examples of the administration using federal powers to exert leverage on academic institutions.
