The Premier League is set to introduce semi-automated offside technology this weekend, which will enhance the speed, efficiency, and consistency of offside decision-making in matches. Developed in collaboration with PGMOL and Genius Sports, this new system uses up to 30 cameras around stadiums to track player movement and ball location, providing accurate offside calls.
The semi-automated offside technology will suggest a “kick point” and automatically create offside lines, saving time in determining players’ positions. While the system is not fully automated and requires human input to confirm decisions, it aims to reduce decision time by approximately 30 seconds for close offside calls.
This new system will not change the accuracy of offside calls but will provide visual graphics for an enhanced viewing experience. Decision visuals will be shared with fans in stadiums and on media platforms, featuring a 3D virtual replay of players with clear offside and onside lines.
Despite concerns about potential delays for close offside calls, the system is designed to speed up the review process. It will maintain the existing thicker lines to prevent the introduction of more “toenail” offsides, ensuring integrity and consistency in decision-making.
Overall, the introduction of semi-automated offside technology is expected to improve the efficiency and consistency of offside decisions in matches, providing fans with a more engaging and transparent viewing experience.
