Conservation Icon Jane Goodall Inspires Portland Students at Lincoln High School
PORTLAND, Ore. — Renowned conservationist Jane Goodall visited Lincoln High School on Friday, engaging students in discussions about environmental conservation and community involvement. Goodall, who founded the Roots & Shoots program over 30 years ago, was excited to witness student presentations highlighting their sustainability projects.
"This initiative is taking place globally, with students ranging from elementary to university levels showcasing their efforts," Goodall remarked. "Their passion and commitment to making a difference are truly inspiring and serve as a reason for hope."
During her visit, Goodall emphasized the importance of local actions in addressing global issues. "While we cannot solve every problem in the world, we can make a meaningful impact in our own communities," she told KGW. "At 91, my mission continues because of the energy and hope displayed by young people like those here today."
Following the student presentations, Goodall delivered an inspiring speech underscoring the significance of environmental respect and kindness toward one another. "You are my main reason for hope,” she encouraged the students. “By learning to respect the environment and each other, you’re paving the way for a brighter future."
Goodall’s connection to Oregon dates back to the 1970s and 80s when she contributed to the design of the Oregon Zoo’s Primate Forest habitat, which opened in 2020. Her influential work in both primate conservation and environmental advocacy has left an indelible mark, inspiring countless young activists across the globe. As she continues her efforts, Goodall reaffirms the vital role of youth in envisioning and shaping a sustainable future.
