Title: Oregon DMV Identifies Additional Cases of Improper Voter Registration
SALEM, Ore. — The Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) disclosed that it has uncovered 118 new cases of individuals being registered to vote without verified proof of U.S. citizenship. This revelation comes as part of an ongoing review of voter registration records initiated after errors were revealed last fall.
According to a DMV report released on Thursday, these newly identified cases are in addition to the approximately 1,600 previously known instances of improper registrations. The majority of the recent findings involved individuals registered during a prior computer system’s usage from 2010 to 2020. In total, 1,739 individuals were mistakenly registered due to technical and clerical errors, though many have since been confirmed as citizens. Notably, only 30 of these individuals have been confirmed to have cast votes, a minute fraction of Oregon’s roughly 3 million registered voters.
The Secretary of State’s elections division is actively investigating these cases. Out of the 30 cases under scrutiny, eight have been resolved, while 19 are ongoing investigations, and three have been referred to the Oregon Department of Justice for further examination.
Officials attribute these clerical mistakes to a problematic drop-down menu used in the DMV’s previous computer system. The Secretary of State’s office emphasized that the individuals involved did not intend to register to vote or claim U.S. citizenship, and expressed regret over the errors.
The DMV has been processing voter registration records monthly since the issue was brought to light, and both the DMV and the Secretary of State’s office have implemented new controls to prevent future occurrences. Automatic voter registration resumed in February, following a temporary halt ordered by Governor Tina Kotek to address the errors. The DMV plans continued monitoring of the Motor Voter data through 2025.
