Research Reveals Partisan Divide in Trust Towards Healthcare Providers
Eugene, OR – A groundbreaking study from the University of Oregon indicates that political beliefs significantly influence individuals’ trust in their healthcare providers. Conducted by UO political scientist Neil O’Brian, the research stemmed from observations of the divisive reactions to COVID-19 measures such as masking and vaccinations.
O’Brian’s survey, which included nearly 2,000 respondents, correlated trust levels in primary care providers to their political affiliations. The results revealed a stark contrast, with individuals identifying as conservative expressing diminished trust in their healthcare professionals, including personal doctors, pediatricians, and emergency room staff, compared to those on the political left. O’Brian highlighted the ramifications of this distrust, particularly its impact on patient compliance with medical guidance, which is essential in addressing health issues and improving overall life expectancy.
The study notes a concerning trend, as U.S. life expectancy has declined in recent years, largely attributed to COVID-19-related deaths. O’Brian pointed out that prior to the pandemic, trust in institutions like medicine remained largely bipartisan. However, this consensus shattered in 2020, leaving Democrats more confident in medical advice than Republicans.
The implications of these findings extend beyond mere statistics. The partisan gap in trust could have real consequences for health outcomes, an area O’Brian intends to explore further. His future research will examine what factors can rebuild trust in doctors and whether discrepancies in trust lead to differing health outcomes for political party affiliations.
Co-authored with independent researcher Thomas Bradley Kent, this pivotal study titled “Partisanship and Trust in Personal Doctors: Causes and Consequences” was published in the British Journal of Political Science. O’Brian was recently recognized as a 2024 Andrew Carnegie Fellow for his impactful work in this field.
