Oregon Food Sector Confronts New Turmoil Due to Trump Tariffs

Press Release: Uncertainty Looms Over Vendors at Northwest Food Show Amid Tariff Turmoil

Portland, OR – The 55th Northwest Food Show at the Portland Expo Center has become a focal point for discussions on the impact of President Trump’s fluctuating tariffs on the food service industry. Vendors and attendees, representing restaurant owners, caterers, and food suppliers, expressed confusion and anxiety over the ongoing uncertainty surrounding tariffs, which are oscillating dramatically.

“The situation is a whipsaw,” remarked Marc Cohen, director of sales for San-J, a Virginia-based Asian sauce manufacturer. Many exhibitors, while hesitant to share their names, voiced similar concerns about the unpredictability of tariffs affecting their businesses, especially so soon after the challenges posed by COVID-19. They noted how the Trump administration’s imposition and subsequent rescission of tariffs leave them with an uncertain business outlook.

Jason Brandt, president and CEO of the Oregon Restaurant and Lodging Association, stated, “Restaurants will be among the first hit with cost escalations due to tariffs on imports,” further complicating the industry’s recovery from the pandemic. Currently, a base tariff of 10% remains in place on most imports, and higher tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China add to the mounting pressures.

Amid the event, which attracts suppliers from across the country, some industry professionals, like Walt Garnett from Mo’s Seafood in Cannon Beach, are exploring local suppliers to mitigate potential price increases. While not all costs have risen, the overall uncertainty is causing hesitation among customers, delaying investments and new orders.

As the food service industry grapples with these challenges, the ongoing tariff situation underscores the pressing need for clarity and stability in the market. The Northwest Food Show continues until Monday evening, highlighting the innovative products and connections pivotal to the region’s food service landscape.
