Rory McIlroy clinches victory at 2025 Masters in thrilling sudden-death playoff against Justin Rose

Rory McIlroy won the 89th Masters Tournament in a one-hole playoff, earning his fifth major championship and his first since 2014. McIlroy had not won a major championship in 11 years, with his last win being the U.S. Open in 2014. Despite a shaky final round, McIlroy held on to win after a topsy-turvy day that saw him lose his lead to Justin Rose but ultimately come out on top in the playoff. Rose almost pulled off a massive comeback, shooting a final-round 66 to tie McIlroy for the lead. McIlroy’s win earned him a green jacket and $4.2 million in prize money. McIlroy’s victory was a redemption of sorts, as he avoided a collapse similar to the one he experienced at the 2011 Masters. The next major in golf will be the PGA Championship in May.
