Cody A. Balmer, 38, has been charged with attempted criminal homicide, aggravated arson, burglary, terrorism, and other counts in connection with an arson attack at Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s home. Balmer allegedly climbed the residence’s fence, broke a window with a hammer, and threw Molotov cocktails inside, causing substantial damage to the residence. Shapiro and others were inside the home at the time, but no one was injured. Balmer turned himself into the police and admitted to harboring hatred towards the governor. He confessed to planning the attack by making Molotov cocktails and walking to the governor’s residence with the intention of causing harm. Security cameras captured Balmer breaking the windows and starting the fires, and he was found with gloves that had a strong smell of gasoline. Balmer confessed to his actions during a police interview and was transported to Dauphin County Prison for arraignment. Investigators found evidence connecting Balmer to the arson at both the governor’s residence and his own home. Balmer admitted that he was aware his actions could have resulted in harm to Gov. Shapiro and others. Despite Balmer’s confession and the evidence against him, he is facing serious charges for his alleged attack on the governor’s home.
