The Oregon School Activities Association’s rankings committee is set to meet on Thursday to discuss the “Human element in Rankings” and potentially change the way high school playoff brackets are determined. Currently, brackets are filled out based on mathematical computer rankings that consider factors like winning percentage and opponents’ win percentage. However, this system has led to questionable seedings in some cases, such as the Clackamas girls basketball team consistently being ranked lower than expected despite a strong record.
One reason for these discrepancies is the inclusion of out-of-state opponents in the RPI ranking but not in the Colley ranking, which has affected teams like Clackamas. The rankings committee has previously discussed adding a human element to rankings, but no changes were suggested at a meeting in 2024. The committee can only make recommendations to the OSAA’s executive board, which has meetings scheduled for May 12 and July 21-23.
The upcoming meeting on Thursday may provide insight into potential changes to the ranking system that could better reflect team performance and seeding in high school playoffs.
