Rogue Valley Residents Stock Up Amid Gun Law Uncertainty

Oregon Gun Stores Experience Surge in Demand Amid New Legislation Uncertainty

Medford, OR — A recent ruling by the Oregon Court of Appeals upholding Measure 114 has spurred a wave of customers rushing to local gun stores across the state. The measure, approved by voters in 2022, introduces restrictions on firearm sales, including a ban on high-capacity magazines and a requirement for permits to purchase firearms. However, implementation is pending as the Oregon Supreme Court considers ongoing challenges to the law.

At Black Flag Armory in Medford, manager Matt Sutterfield reported a spike in demand, likening the store’s activity to a "madhouse." High-capacity magazines have been flying off the shelves as residents seek to stock up before potential restrictions take effect. Sutterfield noted an influx of inquiries, not just from customers but also local law enforcement officers seeking clarity on the evolving laws.

Jackson County Sheriff Nathan Sickler commented on the anticipated challenges of managing the permit process when Measure 114 is implemented. He cautioned that fulfilling these requirements may strain the sheriff’s office, potentially compromising community safety.

In addition to Measure 114, Oregonians are closely monitoring three proposed legislative bills that aim to further regulate firearms. Senate Bill 243 seeks to extend the gun purchasing waiting period and ban devices that increase firing rates. House Bill 3075 targets permit fees associated with Measure 114, while House Bill 3076 proposes a state licensing program for gun sellers, including inventory tracking.

Supporters assert that Measure 114 could reduce gun violence, while critics argue it infringes on Second Amendment rights and overlooks mental health concerns, a key issue as suicide remains the leading cause of firearm fatalities in Oregon.
