Oregon Governor and Treasurer Hold Roundtable Discussion on Tariff Effects on Businesses

Governor Kotek Addresses Economic Impact of Tariffs in Oregon

SALEM, Ore. — Governor Tina Kotek convened a roundtable on Wednesday with business leaders, economists, and state officials to address the financial strain tariffs are placing on Oregon’s economy. Attendees expressed concerns over the ongoing challenges posed by the Trump administration’s tariff policies, which are forcing businesses to raise prices and disrupt long-term planning.

Despite a recent pause on some tariffs, a blanket 10% tariff remains, causing significant financial strain. "What businesses need is predictability and certainty; what these tariffs are causing is the complete opposite," Kotek remarked during a press conference following the meeting. The tariffs on imports from countries like China have surged as retaliation measures, reaching as high as 245%.

The economic repercussions are profound. Trey Winthrop, CEO of Bob’s Red Mill, noted that the company’s costs have already increased significantly due to the tariffs, forcing them to pass expenses onto consumers already grappling with inflation. Similarly, Dave Dillion from Food Northwest explained how the unpredictable tariff environment complicates food production planning, which can take over a year.

Treasurer Elizabeth Steiner highlighted the toll on families, citing that 50% of Oregonians cannot cover a $500 emergency. Economists predict that the tariffs could detrimentally impact families by an estimated $3,800 annually.

Looking ahead, Kotek indicated that while California explores legal avenues against the federal tariff policies, Oregon is still assessing its own strategies. She urged businesses to participate in a survey to gather insights on how tariffs are affecting operations. "The Trump administration needs to adopt a different strategy; this is too much, too fast, and will have long-lasting damage," Kotek concluded.
