Tragic Drowning in Galveston Claims Life of Oregon Man
Galveston, Texas (KTRK) — In a heartbreaking incident, a 49-year-old man from Oregon drowned in Galveston early Saturday morning, marking the first fatal drowning on the city’s beaches this year. The Galveston Island Beach Patrol reported that a lifeguard on duty spotted the man struggling in a no-swimming area near a rock groin located at 39th Street.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and located the man unconscious in the water adjacent to 39th and Seawall. He was promptly transported by ground ambulance to the trauma center at UTMB Health’s John Sealy Hospital. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Authorities have not disclosed the man’s identity pending notification of next of kin. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the inherent risks associated with beach activities, particularly in designated no-swimming zones.
The Galveston Island Beach Patrol urges beachgoers to adhere to safety guidelines, including observing swimming restrictions and remaining vigilant about water conditions, to prevent such tragedies in the future.
As summer approaches, the beach patrol emphasizes the importance of safety in all aquatic activities. The community mourns the loss of the Oregon man, and officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
