Eugene, Oregon – A bizarre scene unfolded on Friday afternoon when Jacob John Daniels, 47, was arrested after brandishing what appeared to be a rifle in the parking lot of an Albertson’s grocery store and Bimart Membership Discount Store. Eyewitnesses reported Daniels shouting threats and behaving erratically, leading to an immediate response from the Eugene Police Department.
Upon arrival, officers mobilized a significant presence, including patrol units, a Drone Team, and a Bearcat armored vehicle. Nearby fire teams were also positioned as a precautionary measure. Local residents were advised to shelter in place, and motorists were instructed to avoid the area.
Officers confronted Daniels, demanding he drop the supposed weapon. Initial attempts at cooperation saw him sit on a curb, but he subsequently refused to move away from the object. This prompted police to use less-lethal sponge rounds to subdue him without causing serious injury.
Remarkably, as officers approached, they discovered the “weapon” was actually a large bong crafted in the shape of a semi-automatic rifle—a fact that surprised many involved in the fast-developing situation. After taking Daniels into custody, he revealed that his actions were part of a suicide attempt, expressing a desire to be shot by police.
