Ambassadors Cook Up Diplomacy in Zimbabwe
HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — In a creative twist on international relations, foreign diplomats in Zimbabwe recently took part in the second annual #ambassadorscookoff. This lighthearted culinary competition allowed ambassadors to swap their diplomatic documents for beloved recipes, specifically a local chicken with rice in peanut butter sauce—a dish made with hardy "road runner" chickens noted for their rich flavor.
Held last month, the cook-off drew attention as ambassadors shared their cooking experiences on social media, engaging with locals who watched their progress online. French Ambassador Paul-Bertrand Barets emphasized the need for fun amid current international tensions, although he ultimately did not win the contest. The title went to Dutch Ambassador Margret Verwijk, while Australian Ambassador Minoli Perera and British Ambassador Pete Vowles claimed second and third places, respectively.
The ambassadors immersed themselves in Zimbabwean culture, sourcing ingredients from rural markets and learning local cooking techniques. They even endeavored to engage in the Shona language, with Zimbabweans appreciating the diplomats’ genuine interest and humility. Vowles, in particular, charmed the online audience with his humorous antics, earning him the Choice Award for best connection with the public.
This event, organized by Zimbabwe’s popular online foodie community TeamFulo, showcased an innovative approach to diplomacy that fosters community spirit and respect for local traditions. As Barets noted, the cook-off allowed diplomats to humanize their roles, bridging gaps and highlighting the rich culinary heritage of Zimbabwe. With improved international relations emerging post-sanction, these efforts could pave the way for deeper connections between Zimbabwe and the diplomatic community.
