Oregon state officials are grappling with the repercussions of a cyber attack that impacted various systems, particularly the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The incident, which occurred on April 9, disrupted the DEQ’s internal email system for several days and temporarily halted vehicle inspections in Medford and Portland.
To navigate this crisis, the Department of Administrative Services (DAS) has enlisted an external contractor for a digital forensic investigation. “The timeline for investigations varies based on the complexity of the incident,” said Andrea Chiapella, DAS communications director, although specifics on the investigation’s duration remain unclear.
As details surrounding the breach emerge, officials are withholding information regarding the nature of any compromised data or necessary system repairs. “While the investigation is ongoing, we cannot provide any details,” Chiapella stated, emphasizing concerns about providing threat actors with additional information.
While reports have suggested that the hacker group Rhysida claimed responsibility and demanded a ransom, state officials have denied these assertions. Chiapella clarified, “No contact has been made with any group claiming responsibility, nor has any ransom been demanded.” She cautioned against accepting unverified claims from the dark web or unreliable sources as factual.
The state has not yet disclosed whether it holds cybersecurity insurance, adding another layer of uncertainty to the aftermath of the attack.
