Daniel Orellana, a 25-year-old Guatemalan man with no prior criminal history, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at a Framingham, Massachusetts gas station on a Monday morning around 6 a.m. Orellana was en route to work when he was intercepted. His family claims he was wrongfully detained and that the treatment he received was unjust. Arquimedes Orellana, Daniel’s father, reported that ICE agents approached his son, inquiring about another individual. Daniel consistently denied knowing the person they were asking about and stated he was heading to work. The agents confiscated his phone and, upon questioning his immigration status, detained him.
Witnesses from the gas station confirmed that the arrest occurred on the premises, leaving Daniel’s vehicle abandoned. After extensive searching, his family managed to establish contact with him, who informed them he had been taken by ICE. Zulema Alfaro, Daniel’s girlfriend, has kept in touch with him and reported that he described the situation as a misunderstanding, yet he was still taken into custody.
The Orellana family immigrated from Guatemala three years ago, fleeing violence. Daniel, on the cusp of graduating with a law degree, left everything behind to seek safety in the U.S., albeit without documentation. Arquimedes Orellana expressed his belief in government efforts to improve the country but stressed the unfairness of detaining innocent, productive individuals. A lawyer has been engaged to assist the family, and they remain hopeful for a swift resolution to Daniel’s case. Currently, he is being held at an immigration detention center in Plymouth, with family awaiting updates following their inquiries to ICE.
