Courtney Neron Appointed to Oregon Senate Following Aaron Woods’ Passing
Published: May 8, 2025
Wilsonville, OR – State Representative Courtney Neron, a Democrat representing Wilsonville, has been appointed to the Oregon Senate, filling the vacancy left by the late Senator Aaron Woods, who passed away from cancer last month. The appointment was finalized on Wednesday during a nearly two-hour meeting with county commissioners from Clackamas, Washington, and Yamhill counties.
Neron, a well-regarded figure among local Democratic officials, was chosen over contenders including energy consultant Dave Backen and Tigard City Councilor Jeanette Shaw. Notably, Backen publicly endorsed Neron during the meeting, praising her qualifications for the role.
Neron, who is entering her fourth term in the State House, currently chairs the House Education Committee. She has deep roots in the community, having grown up in Metzger and Tigard, where she both attended and later taught at Tigard High School. Neron now resides in Wilsonville with her family.
The appointment comes with a dual responsibility, as it will initiate a new selection process to fill Neron’s soon-to-be-vacated House seat. Both Neron and her future replacement will serve until January 2027, with the opportunity to seek a full term in the 2026 elections.
Neron expressed her gratitude for the appointment and her commitment to serving her constituents in the Senate, ensuring that their voices are heard in the legislative process. Her experience in education policy and community engagement is expected to play a significant role in her new role as she continues to advocate for the needs of Oregonians.
