North Korea Claims Leader Kim Oversaw Missile Tests Simulating Nuclear Attacks on Adversaries

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw tests of short-range ballistic missile systems, simulating nuclear counterstrikes against U.S. and South Korean forces, according to state media. This test occurred amid escalating tensions attributed to joint military exercises conducted by the U.S. and South Korea, which North Korea views as preparations for war. On the day of the tests, South Korea’s military detected multiple missile launches from North Korea’s eastern coast, analyzing that these activities could relate to North Korea’s arms exports to Russia in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the tests included a mobile ballistic missile system similar to Russia’s Iskander and 600mm multiple rocket launchers, deemed ballistic by South Korea due to their capabilities. These systems are expected to be equipped with “tactical” nuclear weapons intended for battlefield deployment. The KCNA emphasized that the tests aimed to enhance the operational effectiveness of North Korea’s missile and rocket units and to ensure an immediate response capability in a nuclear crisis.

Critically, Kim Jong Un highlighted the necessity to reinforce the role of nuclear forces in deterring threats and waging warfare, advocating for improved combat readiness. In response to the launches, South Korea’s Unification Ministry condemned the tests as provocative and a threat to regional stability, aligning them with violations of U.N. Security Council resolutions. The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea confirmed that North Korea had launched several missiles from Wonsan, with one traveling approximately 500 miles. Tensions have notably risen on the Korean Peninsula, coinciding with Kim’s intensified nuclear and missile development activities and increased military support to Russia in its war efforts.
