Oregon House Representative Takes Senate Seat Following Lawmaker’s Passing from Cancer

State Rep. Courtney Neron Appointed to Senate Following Sen. Aaron Woods’ Passing

Wilsonville, OR – State Representative Courtney Neron, a Democrat from Wilsonville, has been appointed to the Oregon Senate to complete the remainder of Senator Aaron Woods’ term following his death in April due to cancer. The appointment was finalized during a nearly two-hour meeting with county commissioners from Clackamas, Washington, and Yamhill counties on Wednesday evening.

Neron’s selection comes as part of a process instituted to fill the vacancy left by Woods, with local Democratic officials strongly supporting her candidacy. She emerged as the preferred choice over contenders including energy consultant Dave Backen and Tigard City Councilor Jeanette Shaw. Backen publicly endorsed Neron during the meeting, emphasizing her qualifications as the top candidate for the position.

Currently serving her fourth term in the Oregon House, Neron has chaired the House Education Committee and has a deep-rooted connection to the area, having grown up in Metzger and Tigard, attended Tigard High School, and now residing in Wilsonville with her family. Her new role in the Senate will allow her to work on key legislative issues until January 2027, at which point she will have the option to run for a full term in the 2026 elections.

With Neron’s move to the Senate, the Democratic Party will initiate another appointment process to fill her position in the House, ensuring continued representation for her constituents. This transition highlights the ongoing shifts within Oregon’s legislature while reflecting Neron’s commitment to public service and education.
