Trooper Dismissed in Karen Read Case Acted with ‘Honor and Integrity,’ Supervisor Asserts

In the retrial of Karen Read, a former Massachusetts state trooper’s conduct came under scrutiny regarding his management of the investigation into the death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe. The former trooper, Michael Proctor, was fired after allegations of misconduct emerged during Read’s initial trial. Massachusetts State Police Sergeant Yuri Bukhenik, Proctor’s supervisor, testified that Proctor handled the investigation “with honor and integrity,” despite acknowledging his own disciplinary actions linked to the case.

Read, charged with second-degree murder and other offenses, was involved with O’Keefe, who was found dead in a yard. Prosecutors allege she crashed her SUV into him while intoxicated and left him to die; Read maintains her innocence, claiming a conspiracy to frame her. Her defense contends that O’Keefe may have been assaulted inside a home and that evidence was manipulated by Proctor.

During the investigation, Proctor shared inappropriate messages about Read and her lawyer, displaying bias that could have affected the investigation. Bukhenik indicated that while Proctor contributed to the case, he was only one of several officers involved and did not believe his involvement compromised the investigation’s integrity.

Proctor’s dismissal followed scrutiny of derogatory comments he made about Read and violations of agency protocols. Although he admitted his messages were unprofessional, he argued they did not undermine the investigation’s overall integrity. Bukhenik faced discipline for failing to supervise Proctor adequately, losing vacation days while continuing to serve as a homicide investigator. Ultimately, the trial reflects deep divides around the handling of the case and the alleged biases of law enforcement involved.
