Tyler Marshall Shines as Ida B. Wells Track and Field Star
Ida B. Wells High School junior Tyler Marshall is making waves in track and field, particularly in the hurdles, as he embraces the sport with newfound confidence. Last year, Marshall described himself as chaotic, struggling with late arrivals and a lack of self-assurance. However, a transformative offseason alongside teammate Avery Coker, a two-time state champion, has set him on a path to success.
In 2025, Marshall’s determination has paid off, with him currently holding the fastest times in both the boys’ 110-meter hurdles (14.60 seconds) and the 300-meter hurdles (39.58 seconds). He credits much of his improvement to Coker’s mentorship and a rigorous training schedule that allowed him to surpass personal records consistently.
Marshall’s performance at various events has shown marked improvement. He debuted in the new season with a personal best of 15.76 in the 110 hurdles at the PIL Relays and continued to excel, culminating in a standout time of 14.92 at the Need for Speed Invitational. His recent achievement of running 14.60 in the 110 hurdles and going sub-40 seconds in the 300 hurdles at the Cardinal Varsity Invite affirms his dedication and hard work.
With approaching competitions, including the PIL district meet on May 21 and 23 and the state meet at Hayward Field from May 29-31, Marshall is focused and excited. He expresses that while competition is intense, it’s also a source of motivation, sharpening his mental and physical skills.
Ultimately, it’s not just about winning for Marshall; it’s about enjoying the journey with friends and striving together for personal excellence. “This season has been really fun,” he stated, emphasizing the balance between enjoyment and competition. As Marshall continues to grow, he remains a formidable contender and a testament to the power of perseverance in track and field.
