Up to 1,000 Transgender Service Members Being Discharged Under New Pentagon Directive

The Pentagon has begun implementing a directive that will lead to the discharge of up to 1,000 openly transgender service members, following a recent Supreme Court ruling that allows the enforcement of a ban on transgender individuals in the military. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced this measure, emphasizing a shift away from what he termed “wokeness,” stating there would be no acceptance of “dudes in dresses.” The directive compels service members diagnosed with gender dysphoria to leave the military and prohibits anyone with such a diagnosis from enlisting.

As of December 2024, approximately 4,240 troops had been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, and the true number may be higher. The directive allows these individuals 30 days to voluntarily self-identify before the Defense Department begins to review medical records for those who have not come forward. The timeline calls for active-duty service members to identify themselves by June 6 and those in the National Guard and Reserve by July 7.

Despite challenges, affirmative care for transgender service members has been estimated to cost around $52 million from 2015 to 2024. Pentagon officials have defended the ban by arguing that individuals with a diagnosis of gender dysphoria cannot meet the military’s mental and physical standards.

Limited exemptions are included in the new policy for certain individuals who can demonstrate compatibility with military needs. However, even in cases of exemption, personnel would still be subject to recognition based on their biological sex in various military contexts. The policy reflects a significant shift in military inclusivity and raises questions about the future of transgender individuals in service.
