Federal agents were actively pursuing an investigation into New York City Mayor Eric Adams up until the Justice Department ordered prosecutors to drop the case. Recently unsealed court documents reveal that the investigation, which began in August 2021 while Adams was still Brooklyn borough president, focused on allegations of improper campaign contributions and other illegal activities. Adams was charged in November 2023 after FBI agents seized his electronics, but in February 2024, the Justice Department, under new leadership, instructed prosecutors to discontinue the case, claiming it impeded Adams’ ability to assist in immigration policy during the Trump administration.
Multiple federal prosecutors, including Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor Danielle Sassoon, resigned rather than comply, leading to a judge’s eventual dismissal of the charges. The documents highlight that prior to the dismissal, prosecutors were unearthing more evidence against Adams, and a judge had recently approved warrants to search several properties and access digital information related to the investigation.
One warrant targeted Adams’ partner’s condominium and the mayor’s official residence, Gracie Mansion. The probe included looking into potential favoritism involving a Turkish consulate official seeking educational access for a child.
Adams’ attorney criticized the prosecution, asserting the case should never have been initiated. Following its dismissal, Adams declared his vindication and has maintained a relationship with Trump, suggesting a possible political alliance. Despite the legal resolution, Adams now faces political uncertainty, planning to skip the Democratic primary and instead run as an independent in the upcoming general election.
