Fountain Hills Firefighter Commutes 75 Miles by Bike Daily for Fitness and Clarity
FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. – May 15 marked "Bike to Work Day," promoting a healthy, sustainable lifestyle in the community. This year, one firefighter stands out with an impressive 125-mile round trip from Fountain Hills Fire Station #2 to his home in Queen Creek.
Firefighter Andy Huxtable pedals 75 miles each way to work, making the commute a significant part of his day. Starting at 2 a.m., Huxtable dedicates approximately four hours to cycling, factoring in extra time for potential mechanical issues. “The physical part is much less than the mental part,” he explains, emphasizing the meditative benefits of biking that help him stay mentally sharp and prepared for the demands of his job.
Huxtable uses the Strava app to track his progress and enjoys the scenic routes he takes, which serve as both a workout and a time for reflection on his personal and professional life. "I love it. It’s my time before work," he adds, noting that the commute also keeps him at peak performance for emergency situations.
While some deem his commute extravagant, Huxtable defends his choice wholeheartedly. "I need to work my whole life," he says. His daily journey not only brings him joy but also enhances his readiness for the rigors of firefighting.
For those considering bike commuting, Huxtable advises riding with others for added safety, as avoiding vehicle collisions is a crucial concern for cyclists. His dedication, both to fitness and his role as a firefighter, showcases the profound benefits this lifestyle choice brings.
