HONOLULU — Oliver Widger, a 29-year-old adventurer, is making waves on social media with his audacious journey from Oregon to Hawaii aboard a sailboat alongside his cat, Phoenix. With over a million followers on TikTok and Instagram, Widger’s story resonates with many feeling trapped in their 9-to-5 jobs.
"I think people are just tired of working hard for nothing and want a way out," Widger told the Associated Press. His realization came after a diagnosis that carried a risk of paralysis, prompting him to leave his managerial job at a tire company with no financial safety net and substantial debt. He liquidated his retirement savings, learned to sail via YouTube, and spent months readying his $50,000 vessel.
Since setting sail in April, Widger has shared his adventures through "Sailing with Phoenix." His posts depict a blend of challenges and beauty, from battling waves and seasickness to serene sunsets. He faced harrowing situations, including repairing a rudder while the boat tilted in rough waters, yet has implemented safety measures, including satellite communication.
The U.S. Coast Guard has praised his use of an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) for safety. "That’s a critical piece for anyone motivated by his story," said Lt. Cmdr. Jesse Harms.
As Widger prepares to reach Honolulu, he is also mindful of environmental concerns, keeping track of waste, including cat litter, which poses risks to native wildlife.
Widger hopes to inspire others with his journey, emphasizing that "everything I’ve done I thought was impossible." His story is a testament to pursuing dreams amidst life’s challenges.
