Hawkeyes Shut Out by No. 5 Oregon, 10-0
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team suffered a tough defeat against No. 5 Oregon, losing 10-0 in a seven-inning game on Thursday at Duane Banks Field. This marks the first time the Hawkeyes have faced a shutout since May 28, 2023, against Maryland.
Despite the score, head coach Rick Heller noted that the team’s energy was high and they remained focused throughout the game. "It wasn’t like we played poorly," Heller stated. "These guys have hung in there and given themselves chances to win. I felt we still had a chance up until the seventh."
The Hawkeyes (32-18-1, 21-7) struggled offensively, batting a mere .087 with only two hits compared to Oregon’s 11. Heller pointed out missed opportunities, particularly in the first inning when the team had two runners on base but couldn’t capitalize.
Oregon (39-13, 20-8) started strong, scoring one run in the first inning and extending their lead with a fourth-inning grand slam. They continued to dominate, adding two more runs in the fifth and two solo homers in the seventh to seal a decisive victory.
Cade Obermueller took the loss on the mound, giving up eight runs on eight hits, while striking out eight batters, reaching his 100th strikeout of the season—a milestone achieved by only four other Hawkeyes in program history. Relief pitcher Bryson Walker followed, allowing two runs and recording a career-high five strikeouts.
Looking ahead, Heller remains optimistic, stating, "We can wipe this away with a short memory." The Hawkeyes are set to face the Ducks again tomorrow at 6:02 p.m. (CDT), with RHP Aaron Savary, currently 7-1 this season, starting for Iowa. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network and the Hawkeye Radio Network.
