Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission Administrator Craig Prins Announces Retirement
Salem, OR – Craig Prins, the state administrator of the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission (OLCC), announced his unexpected retirement during a commission meeting on Thursday, effective July 1. Prins, 55, has served in this role since his appointment by Governor Tina Kotek to provide stability to the agency amid tumultuous times.
His departure comes as the OLCC navigates critical projects, including a significant warehouse initiative in Clackamas County and restructuring following the exit of key managers. Prins, who earns a salary of approximately $233,000, expressed pride in the agency’s accomplishments during his tenure and cited personal reasons for his decision, emphasizing the importance of family.
OLCC Chair Dennis Doherty acknowledged Prins’s contributions, noting he had originally intended to stay for just two years. "I held on to you for what, two years, four months,” Doherty quipped, highlighting the agency’s need for continuity.
Governor Kotek’s spokesperson, Roxy Mayer, praised Prins for his commitment to stability and excellent customer service, noting that Tara Wasiak, the deputy director, will succeed him.
Prins’s leadership followed a series of controversies, including a bourbon diversion scandal that led to significant management turnover. His background includes roles at the Oregon Department of Corrections, where he served as inspector general. Earlier this year, he faced scrutiny for allegedly misusing state resources; however, an investigation cleared him of wrongdoing.
Despite the challenges, Prins leaves behind a commission projected to generate $576 million in the current budget cycle, having successfully navigated through a turbulent period with a focus on reform and restructuring.
