Press Article: Rural Residents Push for State Realignment Amid Political Polarization
In a unique response to growing political divides, rural communities in Illinois and Oregon are advocating for a breakup with their respective states, potentially aligning with neighboring states Indiana and Idaho. These movements stem from a belief that rural residents share more in common with their counterparts across state lines than with urban areas, which they argue dominate state politics.
In Illinois, residents of 33 counties have expressed interest in separating from Chicago’s Cook County to form a new state. These counties recently voted in favor of exploring this separation, citing disenfranchisement as urban areas wield significant political power. G.H. Merritt, chair of the New Illinois movement, asserts that rural voices are drowned out and draws parallels to historical grievances of taxation without representation. Meanwhile, Indiana lawmakers have shown willingness to entertain this proposal, with legislation paving the way for such discussions. Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston believes lower taxes and economic opportunities in Indiana could attract discontented Illinois counties.
Simultaneously, the Greater Idaho movement is gaining traction in eastern Oregon, where residents seek to join Idaho, distancing themselves from the Democratic-leaning western side of the state. With nonbinding elections supporting their cause, advocates claim that Oregon’s political landscape is stifling their interests.
However, significant hurdles remain. Both measures require consent from the states losing counties, as well as Congressional approval, making successful reconfigurations of state lines rare. Historical precedent shows only a handful of such changes since the Civil War. Experts, like geographer Garrett Dash Nelson, remain skeptical, noting the lack of political will for these significant restructuring efforts.
As political polarization intensifies, these movements may signal a desire for more localized governance, but the likelihood of actual state realignments remains uncertain.
